Vice-Minister of Culture Daina Urbanavičienė: WOMEX – an excellent platform for strengthening regional cooperation in music
Vice-Minister of Culture Daina Urbanavičienė visited WOMEX – Worldwide Music Expo, the leading networking platform for the world music industry, held in the city of A Coruña (Spain). At the event, she met the state secretaries of the ministries of culture of Estonia and Latvia as well as representatives of music information centres and delegations from the Baltic countries.
According to the Vice-Minister, “WOMEX is an exceptional event for promoting the world music industry, providing a platform for the most varied musical initiatives beyond the boundaries of classical and pop music. The event creates the conditions for representatives of our music industry to get ideas and share experience and to strengthen regional cooperation among the Baltic countries.”
During the fair, there were to be several meetings to discuss how to strengthen regional cooperation, identify opportunities to attract funding, to initiate the Baltic countries’ musical cluster, to encourage cooperation among countries by setting guidelines in the area of music dissemination and export, seeking better results and closer regional cooperation in various musical genres. Representatives of the delegations of the Baltic countries were to participate in these discussions.
Issues, opportunities, and prospects for cooperation were also to be discussed in meetings with WOMEX Founding Director Ben Mandelson and Director Alexander Walter.
Over 2,600 music industry professionals from 90 countries come together every year at WOMEX for its conference, trade fair, showcase concerts and networking opportunities. Music Information Centre Lithuania (MICL) has been setting up national stands at WOMEX for representatives of the Lithuanian music industry since 2013.
MICL organises the Baltic pavilion and a joint programme at WOMEX together with Music Estonia and the Latvian Music Information Centre, in cooperation with Piranha Arts. This year, the united representatives of the Baltic countries’ music industry received funding from the Baltic Culture Fund to carry out this project. MICL activities receive funding from the Lithuanian Council for Culture and the Ministry of Culture.
