The Ministry of Culture rewards Lithuanian film-makers who won prizes at the Locarno Festival
The Ministry of Culture has awarded prizes for the most important international awards in the field of culture to Lithuanian film-makers who were recognised as the best at this year’s Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland.
By order of the Minister of Culture, prizes were awarded to director Saulė Bliuvaitė and producer Giedrė Burokaitė, creators of the film Toxic (‘Akiplėša’), which won the main prize of the festival – the Golden Leopard.
Prizes were also awarded to Laurynas Bareiša, director of the film Drowning Dry (‘Sesės’), which won the Best Direction Award, and to the acting team of the film who won the Pardo for Best Performance: actors Gelminė Glemžaitė, Agnė Kaktaitė, Giedrius Kiela, and Paulius Markevičius.
The prize of the Ministry of Culture for the most important international awards in the field of culture was established in 2019 and amounts to EUR 20,000. The prizes are awarded to recognise the contribution of natural and legal persons who have received major international awards in the field of culture to the promotion of Lithuania’s name in the world. If several authors have received an award for the same work or activity, the prize is distributed equally among them.
This prize has already been given to the creative team behind the opera The Sun and the Sea (‘Saulė ir jūra’), which was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale of contemporary art, to the creators of the documentary film Bridges of Time (‘Laiko tiltai’), which won the Golden Goblet Award at the Shanghai International Film Festival, opera soloist Asmik Grigorian for winning the Soloist of the Year award at the International Opera Awards, the creative team behind the feature film Pilgrims (‘Piligrimai’), which won the Best Film Award (a black lion statuette) in the Horizons competition at the 78th Venice Film Festival, Maria Kavtaradzė and the creative team behind the documentary film Slow (‘Tu man nieko neprimeni’) for winning the award for best direction in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival (USA).
