Simonas Kairys issued declaration by 48 countries in Mexico which calls for Russia to stop war in Ukraine

At the UNESCO World Conference MONDIACULT 2022, the Minister of Culture Simonas Kairys issued a declaration which condemns Russia‘s war in Ukraine.

The countries that signed the declaration call for Russia to immediately stop the war in Ukraine, retreat from the territory of a sovereign state, and stop inflicting enormous damage on Ukraine’s natural, movable and immovable cultural heritage.

“We cannot just keep watching how one country attempts to erase another country’s identity and culture. We cannot tolerate the continuing actions that violate the UNESCO Constitution and our joint conventions”, the declaration’s text emphasises; it was presented to the participants of MONDIACULT 2022 by the Minister of Culture of Lithuania Simonas Kairys.

The declaration was signed by 48 countries of the world: Albania, Andorra, Australia, Canada, Ecuador, Georgia, Guatemala, Iceland, Japan, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, New Zealand, North Macedonia, Norway, Palau, San Marino, Switzerland, Ukraine, United States of America, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.

The UNESCO World Conference on Cultural Policies and Sustainable Development – MONDIACULT 2022, taking place in Mexico, is the largest event of the last few decades dedicated to cultural policies which brings together ministers of culture, governmental agencies, and the nongovernmental sector from all over the world.
