Ministry of Culture meets Ukrainian parliamentarians to discuss improvement of resistance and the role of culture in the face of crises
Strengthening the information resilience of the public and the readiness of the cultural sector to act in crisis situations were the main topics discussed today by the Vice Minister of Culture, Dr Viktor Denisenko, and the head of the delegation of the Committee on Humanitarian and Information Policy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, the Chairman of the Committee, Mykyta Poturaiev, together with other Ukrainian parliamentarians.
‘In the face of today’s geopolitical challenges, as Ukraine heroically fights for its freedom and values and those of Europe as a whole, the ability of the public to resist information attacks and to critically assess information is of particular importance,’ said Dr V. Denisenko. ‘This is an essential part of security for all of us. While we strongly support Ukraine, we must also focus our efforts at home to strengthen societal resilience, foster identity and historical memory, and disseminate authentic historical narratives.’
Ukrainian parliamentarians shared their experiences of the cultural field and the threats they face in the context of the Russian-imposed war. They gave a brief presentation on ways to ensure the information resilience of the public, the role of strategic communication through culture, and methods to strengthen identity. The delegation noted that in the face of the war in Ukraine, the population’s interest in history and reading had increased, and the efforts of state institutions to strengthen the public’s ability to counter disinformation had shown tangible results, with Ukrainians becoming much more resilient than before.
The participants agreed to continue the dialogue by sharing experiences and finding common solutions to the issues discussed.
The meeting was also attended by Kęstutis Vilkauskas, Chairman of the Seimas Committee on Culture, Vilmantas Vitkauskas, Head of the National Crisis Management Centre, and Ewelina Mokrzecka, Advisor to the Minister of Culture.
