Minister of Culture will make a working visit to the USA: will participate in opening of Jonas Mekas exhibition and meet with representatives of Brooklyn, Smithsonian museums and YIVO Institute
On 15–19 February, the Minister of Culture Simonas Kairys will be making a working visit to New York and Washington.
Simonas Kairys will begin his visit in New York with the events of the Jonas Mekas’ centennial programme: he will visit the opening of the exhibition The Camera Was Always Running at the Jewish Museum and will meet with its director Claudia Gould and the exhibition’s curator Kelly Taxter to discuss further cooperation. During his meeting with the Jonas Mekas Estate’s president Sebastian Mekas, Kairys is planning to review the implementation of the centennial’s programme and other joint projects.
The Minister of Culture and Jonathan Brent, the head of the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research in New York, will review the results of the recently completed Edward Blank YIVO Vilna Collections Project and will discuss further cooperation. In New York, Kairys will also meet with composer Žibuoklė Martinaitytė and will later attend the U.S. premiere of her work Saudade. The Lithuanian composer’s work will be performed by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra.
Cooperation opportunities will also be discussed during meetings with the representatives of the Brooklyn Museum in New York and the heads of the Smithsonian Institution’s Archives of American Art in Washington.
During the visit, the Minister of Culture is also planning to meet with representatives of other U.S. cultural and art institutions, Lithuanian organisations and the Lithuanian American Community.
