Minister of Culture Simonas Kairys met online with H.E. Mr Vít Korselt, Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Lithuania.

In the meeting, the Ambassador briefly reviewed the status of the pandemic in Czechia, and described future cultural projects, including an exhibition, to be organised together with the Maironis Lithuanian Literature Museum, marking the centenary of the best-known work by Jaroslav Hašek, the satyrical dark comedy The Good Soldier Švejk. Next year, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Vilnius also expects to organise several events, most importantly those related to Romas Kalanta and the 50th anniversary of his death.

The Minister of Culture noted that cooperation between Lithuania and Czechia is very important in this context, and both countries are united by the idea of liberty so intertwined with Romas Kalanta and the events of the Prague Spring.

“Kaunas is also an excellent platform, allowing us to integrate various ideas and initiatives at a European level, to encourage cultural exchanges”, said Minister Simonas Kairys. He was happy to note that the Embassy of the Czech Republic actively carries out a variety of cultural activities in Lithuania, especially in the field of literary translations and their distribution, cooperates with the Valdas Adamkus Presidential Library-Museum, and that both countries have much in common, so it is certainly worthwhile to deepen and expand cultural connections in a variety of areas.

In the second half of 2022, Czechia will assume the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, and the Ministry of Culture looks forward to the attention that will undoubtedly be paid to culture in the programme of events.
