Lithuanian and Polish cultural heritage preservation experts continue their partnership

On Thursday, the Lithuanian and Polish Expert Group on preservation of the cultural heritage was held the bilateral meeting in Druskininkai to discuss cooperation in the fields of protection of cultural heritage important for both countries, preservation of historical memory, museums, libraries and archives, and to sign an agreed protocol. This is the fourteenth meeting of cultural heritage experts from both countries in this format.

The meeting of the Lithuanian and Polish Expert Group on preservation of the cultural heritage was chaired by Dr Ingrida Veliutė, Vice Minister of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania, and Bożena Żelazowska, State Secretary of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland.

The meeting summarised the ongoing and planned joint bilateral activities in the field of cultural heritage, provided an update on the ongoing restoration of heritage, protection of memorial sites, publishing and dissemination of heritage activities. It was agreed to strengthen cooperation through exchanges of specialists, internships, conferences, exhibitions, scientific publications and information exchange.  

The meeting welcomed joint projects implemented in Lithuania and Poland, the 100th anniversary of the Jewish Science Institute (YIVO) in Vilnius commemorated in 2025, the Year of Maciej Kazimierz Sarbiewski and the Year of Baroque Literature. Special emphasis was given to the constructive and friendly cooperation with the municipal administration of Marki (Poland) in commemorating the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis regarding the installation of the information stand with symbols perpetuating the work of M.K. Čiurlionis planned this year in the vicinity of the Convent of the Franciscan Sisters of the Family of Mary.  

The cooperation between cultural and artistic institutions of the two countries is expected to continue on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the birth of Catherine Jegiellon, Queen of Sweden and Duchess of Finland, the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Seminary of Sejny in 2026, and the 480th anniversary of the publication of Martynas Mažvydas Catechism in 2027.

The meetings of the Lithuanian and Polish Expert Group on preservation of the cultural heritage are part of the long-standing cooperation with Poland. The meetings are held every two years – the fifteenth meeting is going to take place in Poland.
