Exhibition of M. K. Čiurlionis opened in London: first thorough introduction of the author in the UK
While on a work visit in London, the Vice-Minister of Culture Daina Urbanavičienė attended the opening of the exhibition M.K. Čiurlionis: Between Worlds, dedicated to the prominent Lithuanian artist and composer, at Dulwich Picture Gallery.
“This exceptional exhibition of M.K. Čiurlionis is the result of four-year-long work by the curator Kathleen Soriano and the associated institutions. The public of the United Kingdom will be able to visit it for six months. The exhibition is accompanied by a high-quality and inventive educational programme, while the exhibition’s reviews that have been recently printed in the British press draw unexpected parallels between the worlds of Čiurlionis and Tolkien or videogames”, Urbanavičienė says.
The exhibition showcases over 100 of Čiurlionis’ paintings that have been brought from the M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art in Kaunas. During six months of the exhibition, a public programme will be conducted which will introduce the visitors to the works and rich legacy of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis. Concerts, conversations and lectures will introduce M. K. Čiurlionis’ musical compositions and their modern interpretations; scientific material on his work will introduce the historical circumstances; performances and conversations with the most interesting, internationally-awarded modern Lithuanian artists will describe how M. K. Čiurlionis’ work has inspired modern practices.
While visiting in London, the Vice-Minister of Culture Daina Urbanavičienė discussed the matters of cultural cooperation and partnerships during meetings with Graham McKenzie, the Artistic Director of Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival; Cortina Butler, the Deputy Director for Arts, British Council; Nick McDowell, Director of International at Arts Council England; and John Webster, the Head of Scotland House London.
