Discussing cultural ties between Lithuania and South Korea: Minister Š. Birutis met with Ambassador
Today, Minister of Culture Šarūnas Birutis received the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Korea to Lithuania Joyoung Jeon at the Ministry. This is the first official meeting between the Minister and the Ambassador, who took office in October last year after the opening of the Embassy of South Korea in Vilnius.
“We share common democratic values and the strengthening of ties is very important in this geopolitical situation. The intergovernmental agreement signed and the successful projects such as the ArtTech Hub following the Knowledge Exchange Programme with the South Korea Development Institute demonstrate great potential for mutual cooperation. It is particularly important to take advantage of it in order to meet the challenges posed by artificial intelligence and the new opportunities it opens up for the Cultural and Creativity Industries (CCI) sector. We believe that through our joint efforts we can further enrich the cultural life of both countries, especially when commemorating such important anniversaries as the 150th anniversary of the birth of M. K. Čiurlionis,” said Minister of Culture Šarūnas Birutis.
Ambassador Joyoung Jeon also stressed the importance of cooperation in the CCI field, highlighted the common history of resistance between Lithuania and South Korea, and expressed his admiration for the work of M. K. Čiurlionis and the M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art.
The Ministry of Culture encourages direct contacts between cultural and art organisations of Lithuania and South Korea. The programme of visits to Lithuania for foreign professionals run by the Lithuanian Culture Institute is actively operating. Through this programme, a number of leaders and curators of South Korean visual arts, theatre and contemporary dance organisations have visited our country and established direct partnerships.
