Culture ministers in Berlin confirm: "cultural power" is the key to strategic partnership between Lithuania and Germany
During his working visit to Berlin, Šarūnas Birutis, acting Minister of Culture, met with Wolfram Weimer, German Federal Minister for Culture and Media, to discuss key issues of cooperation. During the visit, the ministers agreed to strengthen cultural ties between Lithuania and Germany, promote mutual understanding, and cooperate closely in implementing the Lithuanian-German cultural exchange program for 2027–2028.
The meeting focused on the planned cultural exchange initiative between Lithuania and Germany. It was emphasized that Germany's role requires a new level of bilateral relations, in which "hard power" – the German Brigade in Lithuania – must be complemented by enhanced people-to people relations and mutual understanding through culture. The ministers agreed to set the framework for cooperation, to promote bilateral visits of the institutional representatives and culture professionals, and to start with the programming work.
Issues of information resilience, combating disinformation and historical falsification, and the protection of cultural heritage values in the event of armed conflict were also discussed, emphasizing the importance of the experiences of Germany and Lithuania.
During the visit, the Lithuanian delegation visited the Jewish Museum in Berlin.
Cultural diplomacy was strengthened by a visit to the Berlin Philharmonic, where the delegation attended the concert of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, conducted by Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla, celebrating the 150th anniversary of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, and introducing next to other works an original version of the symphonic poem "The Sea."
