An interactive book published in Lithuania – recognised among the best in the world
An interactive book designed by artist Sigutė Chlebinskaitė, A Flat for Rent authored by Leah Goldberg (1911–1970), will be presented in the USA at an exhibition of finalists in the Meggendorfer Awards.
For more than two decades, the Movable Book Society has awarded the Meggendorfer Prizes, recognising artists, paper engineers and publishers who have designed the most outstanding movable or pop-up books during the previous two years. This year, a conference and related events for such movable and pop-up books will be held from 28 September to 1 October in Cleveland, Ohio (USA). During the conference and related events, attendees will see Chlebinskaitė’s uniquely-designed book, A Flat for Rent, authored by Leah Goldberg (poetic translation by Antanas A. Jonynas, translated from Hebrew by Nathan Gitkind, prepared by “Knygų šalis”, published by “Žalias kalnas”, printed by “Standart Impressa”, 2022).
The book published in Lithuania (Hebrew Dira Le-Haskir, English A Flat for Rent or A Flat to Let) was selected by an international committee as one of the 10 best interactive books published in the world in the past few years in the Meggendorfer Prize for Artist Books category. Chlebinskaitė won this year’s prize in the Book Art contest organised by the Ministry of Culture, and the book won the top prize in the Children and Youth Literature category in the Best Translated Book of the Year competition organised by the Lithuanian Association of Literary Translators. The book’s translators also received the Eugenija Stravinskienė Prize (awarded by the Lithuanian Section of the International Board on Books for Young People, IBBY Lietuva) for the year’s most significant and most artistic translation for children.
In the spirit of German paper engineer Lothar Meggendorfer (1847–1925), the Meggendorfer Prizes are awarded by an international committee in the following categories: 1) Artist Books, 2) Best Paper Engineering – Trade Publication, 3) Emerging Paper Engineer, 4) Lifetime Achievement. A short list of the 10 best book artists is selected, based on innovation, ingenuity and unparalleled excellence in movable book creation, and events are held, including a conference, an exhibition of the works created by the honorable mentions and winners, and a silent auction. Among the winners of the prestigious contest are Marion Bataille (France), David A. Carter (France), Waldo Hunt (USA), Graham Patten (USA), Wang Wei (China) and others.
