Minister Lukas Alsys’s visit to Ukraine: Lithuania joins the International Fund for Ukrainian Cultural Heritage
The Minister of Culture, Lukas Alsys, together with the Chancellor of the Ministry of Culture, Evaldas Raistenskis, is on a working visit to Ukraine, where he met with Tetyana Berezhna, Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister for Humanitarian policy and Minister of Culture. The meeting focused primarily on the protection of cultural heritage in wartime, the strengthening of international cooperation and joint Lithuanian and Ukrainian initiatives in the field of culture.
During the visit, Lithuania confirmed that it is joining the International Fund for Ukrainian Cultural Heritage, which is dedicated to the preservation and restoration of cultural heritage affected by Russian aggression. This fund has already contributed to the restoration of important cultural sites in Ukraine, and there are plans to implement new projects in the future.
“Lithuania is joining the International Fund for Ukrainian Cultural Heritage, which is dedicated to preserving and restoring heritage ravaged by war. This is an important step demonstrating solidarity and responsibility. Lithuania has stood and will continue to stand with Ukraine. We support this country not only with words, but also through concrete actions,” says Minister of Culture Lukas Alsys.
The meeting addressed the challenges and practical solutions related to protecting cultural heritage in wartime conditions. Lithuania will seek to draw on Ukraine’s experience in safeguarding cultural heritage and ensuring the continued operation of cultural institutions under extreme conditions.
The meeting also addressed the issues of countering Russian propaganda and disinformation, as well as building public resilience. Both countries agreed to strengthen cooperation by sharing experience in combating information threats.
The Ministers of Culture also discussed preparations for Lithuania’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2027. Lithuania will seek to actively involve Ukraine in meetings of culture ministers and other events on the Presidency’s programme and will promote joint cultural projects in Europe as well as institutional cooperation between museums, theatres and other cultural institutions.
The visit to Kyiv once again confirmed Lithuania’s strong support for Ukraine and the determination of both countries to work together to safeguard cultural heritage and develop a long-term strategic partnership.
