In Finland Deputy Minister of Culture T. Juočys discussed Europe’s cultural future, the challenges posed by artificial intelligence and support for Ukraine
On 14–15 August, Tomas Juočys, Deputy Minister of Culture, took part in an informal meeting of European Union culture ministers in Finland. The meeting took place in the city of Oulu, which is this year’s European Capital of Culture.
During discussions at Oulu Town Hall, EU culture ministers and other delegation representatives discussed the future of cultural policy, focusing in particular on the protection of artistic freedom and the potential applications of artificial intelligence. Speaking about the challenges facing the cultural and creative sectors, the Lithuanian Deputy Minister of Culture highlighted several key priorities.
“Our aim is to ensure that innovation in Europe goes hand in hand with the protection of creators, cultural diversity and democratic values. We must strengthen the capabilities of artificial intelligence in the cultural sector and help creators to use these technologies responsibly. It is also essential to ensure effective protection of artists’ rights, fair remuneration and greater transparency when copyright-protected works are used for educational purposes. Furthermore, AI systems must contribute to the preservation of Europe’s linguistic and cultural diversity and be properly adapted to lesser-used languages and their cultural contexts,” emphasised T. Juočys.
The meeting also focused heavily on Ukraine and support for its cultural sector. T. Juočys called for the strengthening of strategic and sustainable European support for the reconstruction of Ukraine’s cultural sector, moving away from fragmented aid towards a coordinated ‘Team Europe’ approach. Solidarity with Ukraine was also reflected in a special exhibition in Oulu, which featured a Russian attack drone shot down in Ukraine, emphasising the importance of peace and international cooperation.
During a separate meeting with Carolien Coenen, Deputy Secretary-General of the Department of Culture, Youth and Media in Flanders (Belgium), T. Juočys discussed preparations for Lithuania’s upcoming Presidency of the Council of the EU, the preservation of cultural heritage in the digital sphere, and joint initiatives to support the reconstruction of Ukraine’s cultural sector.
