United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO

Lithuania joined the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization UNESCO in 1991.
In 1992 was established the Lithuanian National Commission for UNESCO, in 1993 – the Permanent Delegation of the Republic of Lithuania to UNESCO.
Secretariat of the Lithuanian National Commission for UNESCO serves the Lithuanian National Commission for UNESCO and supports implementation of its decisions.
 

UNESCO work in the field of culture

Protection of cultural and natural heritage, effective implementation of the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage (1972). Institutions designated for the protection of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Lithuania:
the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania – Vilnius Historic Centre, Kernavė Archaeological Site (Cultural Reserve of Kernavė), Modernist Kaunas: Architecture of Optimism, 1919-1939;
the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Lithuania – Curonian Spit, Struve Geodetic Arc.

Safeguarding of the intangible cultural heritage, implementing Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (2003). National coordinators – the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania and the Lithuanian National Centre for Culture.

Strengthening the protection of cultural and natural heritage in an armed conflict or natural disaster situation, implementation of the Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict (1954). Protection and promotion of the diversity of cultural expressions, drawing on human creativity and potential of the cultural and creative industries, implementing the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions (2005).
