The appointed Lithuanian ambassador to France intends to strengthen cultural links

The Minister of Culture, Mr. Mindaugas Kvietkauskas met the appointed ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania to France, Mr. Nerijus Aleksiejūnas.

They discussed cooperation of both countries in various areas of culture and art, need to reinforce direct relations between artists and cultural organizations, situation of Lithuanian studies in France, inducement of translations of the Lithuanian literature into French, and related initiatives.

Mr. N. Aleksiejūnas showed interest in the programme “Kaunas as the European Capital of Culture 2022” and in the projects under implementation that are related to bringing Kaunas interwar modernism architecture up-to-date, as well as to relations of interwar Kaunas with France.

France is a strategically important country with regard to cooperation in cinema area and projects of joint production of films. Lithuania and France signed an agreement on joint production of films in 2015.

The Notre-Dame Cathedral destroyed by fire in mid-April was also discussed in the meeting. The Ministry of Culture has already notified the embassy of the Republic of France earlier that the ministry offers a specialized expert assistance for restoration of portable cultural values.

Minister M. Kvietkauskas expressed his joy about future plans: it is planned to open an exhibition of photographer Moi Ver (Moshe Raviv-Vorobeichic), who was born in Vilnius in the beginning of the 20th c. and studied and lived in Paris, in the National Art Gallery in the end of this year or beginning of the next year. The international exhibition “Art of Symbolism of the Baltic States” presented in the Orsay museum in 2018, is planned next July in the same venue. The programme of residencies for the Lithuanian writers francophones and translators that is to be started this year should induce translations of the Lithuania literature into French.

“Culture is going to be an important part of my work and one of the priorities, so I am going to give big attention to it,” – said Mr. N. Aleksiejūnas.

Mr. N. Aleksiejūnas starts to work as an ambassador on the 2nd of August.
