Vice-Minister of Culture Romas Jarockis met with the UNESCO international expert Jad Tabet from France, who visited Lithuania at the invitation of related Lithuanian institutions with the purpose to assess the first draft of Kaunas Modernism Architecture nomination file for the inscription on the UNESCO Tentative World Heritage List.

Jad Tabet has noted that Kaunas Modernism Architecture has the potential to be nominated as the UNESCO World Heritage Site; however, this will require significant efforts to adequately describe and justify the site. He underlined that the site should be treated as an urban ensemble but not as a group of buildings. Mr. Tabet stressed that it is crucial to emphasize in the nomination file the continuity of the development of Kaunas Modernism Architecture having in mind its origin and endurance. This new candidate to the UNESCO World Heritage List should be introduced to the international community as a story embedded in a given place and time. The expert has also provided several examples when the modernism architecture was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List because of its exceptional links with the local historical development and traditions.

During his stay in Lithuania, Jad Tabet has also visited Kaunas where he met the representatives of Kaunas City Municipality as well as architects and cultural heritage specialists.
