December 5, Minister of Culture Liana Ruokytė-Jonsson met with experts from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Arbitration and Mediation Centre, who arrived to Lithuania with a working visit.

“I am very pleased that the cooperation provided for in the Memorandum of Understanding signed with WIPO in October has begun. We are already discussing specific works on how to promote an alternative dispute resolution process in the field of copyright. Our specialists have the opportunity to take advantage of the existing global practice and good examples” said the Minister of Culture.

During the meeting further cooperation between the Ministry of Culture and the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center in resolving copyright disputes through mediation was discussed. This is provided for in the Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the Republic of Lithuania and the WIPO on Alternative Dispute Resolution, which was signed by the Minister of Culture Liana Ruokytė-Jonsson and the WIPO Director General Francis Gurry, 26 October 2017.

The Law on Copyright and Related Rights provides for the possibility of applying mediation - an impartial alternative dispute resolution process - in the field of copyright. In implementing the provisions of the Law, the Council of Copyright and Related Rights of Lithuania was formed, the main functions of which are to provide the services of alternative dispute resolution and mediation in negotiations.

6 December 2017, continuing the cooperation provided for in the Memorandum of Understanding, the Ministry of Culture together with the WIPO held a seminar intended for lawyers, scientists, representatives of the collective administration associations and associations of users of works - “Mediation in copyright disputes”. Experts of the WIPO Arbitration and Meditation Center, Lithuanian scientists and copyright professionals were presenting their reports at the seminar.
