EU Culture Ministers: Creative Europe programme must be included in next EU budget

Minister of Culture Šarūnas Birutis, together with other European Union (EU) culture ministers, has sent a joint letter to the European Commission expressing their support for the Creative Europe programme and the need for its continuation in the next EU multiannual financial perspectives.

The European Commission is urged to continue to prioritise cultural diversity and artistic freedom, to ensure effective and sector-specific EU incentives, and to ensure flexible EU policies and funding priorities that respond to the rapidly changing needs of the sector.

The Creative Europe programme is a key EU instrument for preserving and promoting cultural diversity, heritage and creativity, and for fostering the audiovisual sector in Europe, the 27 EU culture ministers said.

"The cultural and creative sectors, including the audiovisual industry, need effective and sector-specific EU incentives. They must be highly visible and strategically designed to support cultural cooperation and content creation. We would like to underline that only through such targeted measures can we ensure the long-term resilience of the sector, its competitiveness and the vitality of Europe's cultural and creative ecosystem," summarised the EU Culture Ministers.

"Creative Europe is an EU programme that supports Europe's cultural and creative sectors, from audiovisual, media and cultural heritage to music, visual and performing arts.
