During Simonas Kairys’ visit in New York, agreement was reached regarding strengthening of creative industries sector

The Minister of Culture Simonas Kairys, who is in New York, USA on a working visit, attended discussions during the North American Lithuanian Business Forum (NALB) on the future of creative industries and the role of the media in the context of the development of artificial intelligence.

During the latter discussion, the minister highlighted not just the benefits provided by artificial intelligence but also the threats it poses when it is used to generate and spread false information. According to Kairys, the flow of disinformation may increase significantly and become harder to identify. This is particularly relevant as election is approaching in many countries.

“Vitally important for the prevention of this are international agreements and jointly developed technologies, while not forgetting a just remuneration for creators and the issues of the intellectual property protection related to the use of work made by creators in artificial intelligence systems. The strengthening of independent, investigative media, protection of journalists, and increase of the public’s critical thinking are the weaponry that can be used to manage the threats of disinformation today and in the future. Under appropriately created conditions, the media itself will do what its purpose is: protect democracy”, the Minister of Culture said.

At the discussion on the future challenges of creative industries, he emphasised the need to develop talents in this area as well as the necessity to build a sustainable ecosystem and ensure synergy between different institutions and sectors, because cooperation between new generation of creators, tech talents and business professors is vitally important for the growth of cultural and creative industries as well as the increase of competitive advantage.

For the last seven years, the NALB forum has been drawing in several hundreds of business, political and public leaders; it aims to strengthen business relations between Lithuania and North American countries, build a dialogue, and develop successful partnerships, thus contributing to the economic growth of Lithuania.

Simonas Kairys, who is currently visiting New York, presented an official Letter of Appreciation to Grammy winner, Lithuanian-origin jazz musician Nicole Zuraitis for promoting the name of Lithuania worldwide.

On Friday, Kairys will meet with Peter Gelb, the General Manager of the Metropolitan Opera, where Asmik Grigorian will debut in April. During the meeting, the topic of support to representatives of Ukrainian culture will also be discussed.

The minister’s plans in New York also include meetings with composer Žibuoklė Martinaitytė and pianist Gabrielius Alekna, both of whom work here: they both are preparing programmes for the upcoming 150th anniversary of the birth of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis. Simonas Kairys will visit Emilija Škarnulytė’s personal exhibition AEqualia at the Canal Projects gallery and will meet with the head of this cultural institution.

On Saturday, the minister of culture will attend a concert of Lithuanian choral music organised on the occasion of the upcoming March 11th, during which he will congratulate the Lithuanian community and the event’s guests.
