The 100th anniversary of the restoration of Lithuania to be heard abroad

At the press conference held at the Ministry of Culture on February 8, the Minister of Culture Liana Ruokytė-Jonsson presented the program of cultural events abroad for the commemoration of the restoration of centenary of the state of Lithuania.

“The program is solid prepared in cooperation with the most important European cultural organizations - Lithuanian artists will become an integral part of the cultural programs of these organizations. One of the most important goals is not only the presentation of Lithuania on the occasion of the anniversary important to the state, but also the long-term result - new contacts, new building up and consolidating partnerships that we hope will exist after the end of the centenary events. This year’s experience is no less important - cooperation with Latvia and Estonia, both in developing joint projects and in co-presenting themselves abroad as a Baltic region. This year, together, we will become truly more visible in the cultural context of Europe,”said Minister of Culture Liana Ruokytė-Jonsson.

Individual cultural programs for the commemoration of the centenary of the restoration of the state of Lithuania will be held in Belgium, Israel, the United Kingdom, China, Poland, France, Russia, Sweden, Ukraine and Germany.

Main accents of the program are the exhibition “Wild Souls. Symbolism of the Baltic states” to be presented at the Orsay Museum in Paris from April 10 to July 15. The curator of the exhibition is an expert of the symbolism era Rodolphe Rapetti (France). This is a joint project of the Museum of Fine Arts of the Baltic states and the Orsay Museum. The exhibition will present the art of symbolism of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia created from the end of 19th century till 1918. The works of 133 symbolismartists such as Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, Petras Kalpokas, Ferdinandas Ruščicas, Adomas Varnas, Antanas Žmuidzinavičius and other Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian artists have been selected for the exhibition.

The Baltic States will introduce themselves in the special “Market Focus” program events at the international London Book Fair to be held from 10 to 12 April. At the London Book Fair, Lithuania will be represented by Kristina Sabaliauskaitė, one of the most read contemporary Lithuanian writers, the author of international bestseller “Silva rerum”, which will be presented in the special program “The Author of the Day”. A poet, intellectual Tomas Venclova, an internationally acclaimed prosaist Undinė Radzevičiūtė, a winner of the European Union Literature Prize in 2015, and a creator of prose, poetry, dramaturgy, actor and director Alvydas Šlepikas will also be presented there. Especially for this fair, even 15 new books of Lithuanian authors have been translated into English language, which will appear on the UK and international English-language market.

The most important accent of the cultural program of the centenary is the festival of Lithuanian culture in Rome “FLUX. Festival Lituano delle arti”, which will take place in “Auditorium - Parco della Musica” on May 4-15. 80 Lithuanian artists will participate in the festival. The Lithuanian Art Festival is patronized by the President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė and the President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella. This ambitious project has been developed in collaboration with the prestigious Roman institutions, such as the “Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia”, the Roman theater “Teatro India”, Museum of Contemporary Art and Architecture “MAXXI”. The festival will present 18 events: from contemporary dance, classical and jazz music concerts, theater performances to exhibitions and video presentations.

The program of cultural events for the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the restoration of the state of Lithuania will comprise a significant musical part - in May, the famous Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla will conduct the orchestra of Santa Cecilia in the famous Italian “Auditorium - parco della musica”. It is expected that the program will also include the concerts of the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, Mūza Rubackytė, string quartet Mettis and Martynas Levickis and the Microorchestra Ensemble. The Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Mirga Gražinytė-Tylos will perform at the Baltic Sea Festival in Stockholm, the conductor will appear at the Warsaw Philharmonic together with the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra on February 28, and on March 2, at the festival of the Baltic States in the “Konzerthaus” in Berlin.

Other events abroad are also planned for the centenary such as exchange of the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theater, the Latvian National Opera and Ballet, and the Estonian National Opera - it is planned to present three of the best performances. Joint exhibition of the Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian national libraries “The Baltic States: the 100th anniversary”, exchange of artistic and documentary films. The most important accent of the program is the 13th Baltic Triennial, which for the first time in its history will take place in all three Baltic States from May to November 2018.

It is also important to mention a series of events to be organized in one of the main European art centers the BOZAR in Brussels dedicated for the 100th anniversary of the Central and Eastern European countries - a discussion of intellectuals, historians, a project of avantgarde dance, a symposium for the creation of new states and cities.
