Action Plan for Implementation of European Year of Cultural Heritage in Lithuania Approved

The action plan for the implementation of the European Year of Cultural Heritage (2018) in Lithuania was approved at the order of the Minister of Culture Liana Ruokytė-Jonsson. Its objective is to contribute to the initiative approved at the common decision of the European Parliament and the Council of Europe to announce the year 2018 as the European Year of Cultural Heritage.

“We hope that the action plan of the European Year of Cultural Heritage (2018) approved on the Lithuanian scale will make a contribution to all activities dedicated to the European Year of Cultural Heritage in 2018. I would like to encourage culture organisations of cities and regions as well as municipalities to join the European Year of Cultural Heritage actively by paying attention to local cultural heritage, by organising sightseeing tours to cultural heritage, public lecture cycles as well as other promotional and cognitive activities of cultural heritage. I am sure that this will increase the understanding of the benefit and value of cultural heritage preservation, its impact on the quality of our living environment and will help to ground our relation with our place”, the Minister of Culture Liana Ruokytė-Jonsson states.

The preparatory work for the project Kaunas – European Capital of Culture 2022 of a large scale is being done at the moment, the case for nominating Kaunas modernist architecture for entering this cultural value into UNESCO World Heritage List has been started, and a centenary of the restoration of the state of Lithuania will be celebrated in 2018. In order to integrate the activities and related resources of interested institutions and organisations, activities dedicated to the centenary of the restoration of the state of Lithuania are linked with activities promoting the understanding of common cultural heritage of Europe getting modern and paying special attention to signs of modernisation in Lithuania, especially modernist architecture, in the action plan.

In 2018 cultural heritage and its European dimension will serve as the theme of traditional annual events – Night of Museums, Culture Night in Vilnius, Road of Lithuanian Museums. In the second half of the year, an international scientific conference is planned in Kaunas that will be dedicated to national modernisms and diversity of modernism, exceptional universal value of Kaunas modernism and its future. The conference will be accompanied by an international forum “Route of Modernist Architecture in Europe: Challenges and Possibilities” dedicated to the actualisation of cultural routes, the creation of a network of modernist cities in Europe with the perspective to build a route of modernist architecture in Europe, which could become one of the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe.

According to the approved action plan of the European Year of Cultural Heritage (2018) in Lithuania, it is intended to organise and promote special architectural tourist routes, cycles of excursions related with signs of Lithuania getting modern, to organise an international heritage protection students’ summer camp for the acquaintance with Kaunas modernist architecture and to prepare an exhibition of archives dedicated to the end of the World War I presenting a wider historical context, in which modern European states formed.

Institutions of culture, associations, universities and municipalities intend to cooperate in the implementation of action plan activities. The Lithuanian national coordinator of the European Year of Cultural Heritage (2018) is the Department of Cultural Heritage under the Ministry of Culture. The Ministry of Culture will coordinate the implementation of the action plan on the national level, and all relevant information will be updated regularly and announced on the website of the Ministry of Culture.
