United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO

Lithuania joined the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization UNESCO in 1991.

In 1992 was established the Lithuanian National Commission for UNESCO, in 1993 – the Permanent Delegation of the Republic of Lithuania to UNESCO.

Secretariat of the Lithuanian National Commission for UNESCO serves the Lithuanian National Commission for UNESCO and supports implementation of its decisions.

UNESCO work in the field of culture

Protection of cultural and natural heritage, effective implementation of the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage (1972). National coordinators – the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania and the Secretariat of the Lithuanian National Commission for UNESCO.

Protection of the intangible cultural heritage, implementing Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (2003). National coordinators – the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania and the Lithuanian Folk Culture Centre.

Strengthening the protection of cultural and natural heritage in an armed conflict or natural disaster situation, implementation of the Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict (1954). National coordinators – the Ministry of National Defence of the Republic of Lithuania, in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania.

Prevention of illicit trafficking of cultural property, reinforcing Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property (1970). National coordinator – the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania.

Safeguarding the Underwater Cultural Heritage, implementing the Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage (2001). National coordinator – the Department of Cultural Heritage under the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania.

Protection and promotion of the diversity of cultural expressions, drawing on human creativity and potential of the cultural and creative industries, implementing the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions (2005). National coordinators – the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania and the Lithuanian Film Centre under the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania.

Culture for sustainable development, museums and cultural tourism. National coordinator – the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania.
